Joint Emergency Teams Douse Major Fire at Bono Energy Terminal, Apapa
By Success Okezie
A potentially disastrous fire outbreak at Bono Energy Terminal in the Ibru Jetty Complex, Apapa–Oworonshoki Expressway, was swiftly contained on Friday through a decisive, coordinated operation by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), and Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).
At 12:04 p.m. on Friday, July 3, 2026, distress calls reported a raging fire at the terminal located by Coconut Bus Stop, Olodi-Apapa.
Within minutes, firefighters from Ajegunle, Sari Iganmu, and Isolo Fire Stations arrived at 12:16 hours to a grim scene: a 5-million-litre Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) storage tank was fully engulfed in flames, with thick smoke billowing into the sky.
The cause of the inferno is yet to be ascertained and has been placed under investigation.
Coordinated Response Averts Disaster
What could have escalated into a major industrial disaster was averted by the rapid deployment of inter-agency resources.
Firefighters from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, backed by NPA and NIMASA emergency teams, and supported by response units from neighbouring oil and gas facilities, launched a joint assault on the blaze.
Their priority: contain the fire, protect adjoining tank farms, and safeguard critical port infrastructure.
Through professionalism, courage, and seamless collaboration, the fire was brought under control and completely extinguished by 1:54 p.m. No lives were lost.
Confirming the incident, Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, said:
“Our teams were fully deployed to contain the blaze and protect nearby installations. I am pleased to report that no casualties were recorded.”
Even after the flames were put out, NPA and NIMASA personnel remained on site with Lagos Fire Service operatives, conducting cooling operations and surveillance to prevent any re-ignition.
The successful containment underscores the strength of inter-agency collaboration in protecting lives, assets, and the economic nerve center of the nation.
