Tin can Customs Command Enters New Era As Comptroller Anani Unveils Compliance -First Leadership

Comptroller Joseph Anani has taken command at Tincan Island Port, and his opening moves set the tone immediately. He’s launched a series of targeted engagements, facility inspections, and courtesy calls — all designed to tighten operations, rebuild stakeholder trust, and deepen collaboration with security agencies. The goal is clear: make Tincan Island Port faster, cleaner, and more efficient.

His first act in office was a boots-on-the-ground familiarization tour. Comptroller Anani moved through Customs formations and terminals, seeing things for himself. He assessed infrastructure, checked the state of officers’ workspaces, and studied how daily operations flow. The inspection wasn’t ceremonial — it was diagnostic. Better workplace conditions mean sharper service delivery, and that’s the foundation he’s laying for the Command.

Next, he convened a high-level meeting with the major freight forwarding bodies: ANLCA, NAGAFF, NCMDLCA, APFLON, and other industry leaders. The message was direct. Seamless trade only happens where compliance, professionalism, and partnership exist. He positioned agents and brokers as critical allies, not just users of the system, and challenged them to uphold standards that protect both business and the nation.

Comptroller Anani then rolled out his operational blueprint: total compliance with Customs procedures and the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023. He raised the bar for every transaction at the port. No room for indiscipline, no tolerance for sharp practices that erode integrity. His stance was firm — Tincan must become the benchmark for lawful, transparent trade.

“We are setting a new tone anchored on compliance, collaboration, and service excellence. Every stakeholder has a role to play in making Tincan Island Port a model of trade facilitation and operational efficiency,” he stated. The quote captured his leadership philosophy: standards first, teamwork always.

He followed up with a strategic roundtable that brought together terminal operators, shipping lines, importers, exporters, and captains of industry. He assured them of an open-door policy and pledged a business-friendly environment for legitimate trade. The Command, he said, will work with traders, not against them.

The Comptroller then challenged terminal operators directly. He urged them to upgrade facilities and expand operational space. More berths, more yards, more efficiency — that’s how Tincan attracts bigger vessels, cuts turnaround time, and competes globally. Infrastructure investment, he stressed, is not optional if the port wants to lead.

On security, Comptroller Anani paid a courtesy visit to CP Toyin Agbaminoja of the Port Authority Police, Western Command. Both leaders agreed that national security and port efficiency are linked. They reaffirmed joint action to protect lives, secure cargo, and safeguard government assets. The Police pledged stronger intelligence sharing and operational backup.

He also met with Commander Solomon Omotosho of NDLEA to tighten the noose on drug trafficking. Both agencies committed to intelligence-driven operations, real-time information exchange, and coordinated enforcement. The message to traffickers was clear: Tincan’s gates are closed to illicit narcotics.

Comptroller Anani expressed deep appreciation to the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for the appointment. He pledged to honor that trust by building on existing achievements and advancing the Service’s core mandates without compromise.

Finally, he anchored the Command’s direction to the CGC’s 3C policy thrust: *Consolidation, Collaboration, and Innovation*. These three principles will guide Tincan Island Port’s push for higher revenue, faster trade facilitation, stronger stakeholder engagement, and tighter national security. With that framework in place, Comptroller Anani’s tenure has begun with purpose.
