The Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, has reiterated the agency’s resolve to push for stronger maritime integration, regional cooperation, and human capacity development across Africa.
Dr. Mobereola made the remarks while receiving the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Liberia in Lagos, Mr. Dapo Akinosun, SAN, at NIMASA’s headquarters. The meeting, he said, was a clear reflection of the enduring and mutually beneficial relationship between Nigeria and Liberia, particularly in the maritime sector where both countries share strategic interests.
According to the NIMASA boss, the future of Africa’s maritime industry depends on how well nations on the continent collaborate. He noted that stronger partnerships among African states are key to unlocking the full potential of the continent’s vast maritime resources, accelerating growth of the Blue Economy, and driving sustainable development across regions.

Speaking on the need for urgent action, Dr. Mobereola stated: “The time has come for African nations to upscale maritime collaboration. Our partnership with Liberia is a step in the right direction. It will help us build capacity, deepen regional cooperation, and create real opportunities for African youths within the global maritime industry.”
He stressed that capacity building must go beyond national borders. “We must collectively build maritime capacity beyond borders. Sea-time training and practical exposure are non-negotiable if Nigerian and African youths are to compete effectively and confidently in the international maritime space,” he added.
The DG also used the opportunity to express appreciation to the Liberian Government for its support during Nigeria’s successful campaign for the Category C seat at the International Maritime Organization, IMO. He noted that the gesture is proof of the productive and long-standing maritime relations the two nations have maintained over the years.
Earlier in his remarks, Mr. Dapo Akinosun, SAN, said the visit was aimed at strengthening the historic ties between Nigeria and Liberia while promoting deeper maritime cooperation for mutual benefit.
He described the maritime sector as a powerful engine for economic growth, regional integration, and Blue Economy development. The envoy also commended NIMASA’s leadership for ongoing reforms and efforts to reposition Nigeria’s maritime industry for sustainable growth, investment, and global relevance.
“Nigeria has shown genuine commitment to maritime partnership and regional development. Liberia is looking forward to deeper collaboration with NIMASA in areas of maritime administration, safety standards, capacity development, and trade promotion. This is how we advance Africa’s Blue Economy together,” Akinosun said.
Both parties agreed that the meeting sets the tone for expanded cooperation between Nigeria and Liberia, with a shared focus on training, safety, trade facilitation, and youth empowerment. The consensus was clear: by working together, African nations can transform the continent’s maritime sector into a competitive force globally while creating jobs and opportunities for the next generation.
