Nigeria has called for stronger international collaboration in the maritime sector to foster exchange of ideas, expertise and technology that will ensure safer, more efficient and environmentally sustainable global shipping.
The call was made by the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola, while representing the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, His Excellency Adegboyega Oyetola, CON, at the 2026 World Maritime Day Parallel Event holding in Busan, Republic of Korea.
Dr. Mobereola stressed the need for participating nations to move beyond deliberations to forging practical, result-oriented partnerships that deliver measurable benefits, particularly in strengthening maritime regulation, building professional capacity and enhancing industry competitiveness.
According to him, Nigeria’s priority at the global gathering is to leverage opportunities presented by the event to improve regulatory performance, create greater opportunities for Nigerian maritime professionals and enhance the country’s competitiveness in the global maritime space, in line with the Federal Government’s Marine and Blue Economy agenda.
He noted that sustained international cooperation remains critical to addressing emerging challenges in global shipping, driving innovation, promoting maritime safety and advancing environmentally responsible shipping practices.
Dr. Mobereola, who is leading Nigeria’s delegation to the event, said the Parallel Event provides a vital platform for maritime leaders, policymakers and industry stakeholders to deliberate on pressing issues affecting the global shipping industry and explore new avenues for cooperation.
On the sidelines of the event, Dr. Mobereola held a bilateral meeting with former Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Mr. Kitack Lim, where he expressed appreciation for Lim’s outstanding contributions to the development of the global maritime industry during his tenure at the helm of the United Nations specialised agency.
The meeting, he said, also underscored the importance of sustained dialogue and collaboration among maritime leaders in advancing shared objectives and supporting the growth of the global maritime community.
Nigeria’s active participation in the 2026 World Maritime Day Parallel Event reaffirms the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening international maritime relations, expanding professional capacity and leveraging strategic partnerships to unlock the vast potentials of the marine and blue economy for national development.
