In a major blow to smuggling networks, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘A’, has recorded a significant enforcement breakthrough, intercepting contraband goods valued at over ₦5.5 billion and thwarting hundreds of smuggling attempts within an eight-week period.

Comptroller Gambo Aliyu, Customs Area Controller (CAC) of the unit, made the disclosure during a comprehensive operational briefing. He highlighted the intensification of anti-smuggling operations and a renewed emphasis on intelligence-driven enforcement across the South-West border corridors.

According to Comptroller Aliyu, the unit intercepted 473 smuggling attempts within the period, a success he credited to advanced surveillance technology, improved intelligence-sharing, and robust cooperation with sister security agencies.

Seized items included 8,794 bags of foreign rice, 22 used vehicles, 1,863 used refrigerator compressors deemed environmental hazards, and 31,705 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). The operation also yielded used clothing, 485 used tyres, and several cylinders of hazardous chemicals.

“These seizures underscore our intensified commitment to enforcing the fiscal policies of the Federal Government and safeguarding the nation’s economy against economic saboteurs,” Comptroller Aliyu stated.
In a parallel drive against drug trafficking, the unit launched a special enforcement campaign codenamed *Operation Hawk*. The initiative is designed to target illicit drug networks and dismantle supply chains that fuel criminal activity and social instability.

As part of the operation, officers intercepted 3,340 parcels of cannabis indica weighing approximately 1,540 kilograms. In a separate intelligence-led operation along the Lagos-Abidjan corridor, customs officers also seized 6.35 kilograms of cocaine.

In a major breakthrough, officers recovered a ₦2.35 billion cocaine shipment concealed in a green Toyota Highlander driven by a 71-year-old suspect. The consignment contained both powdered and crystalline cocaine.

Comptroller Aliyu assured that the narcotics would be handed over to the NDLEA for prosecution, emphasizing that such cooperation remains vital to effective enforcement.

He warned that smugglers are constantly evolving their methods, making it imperative for security agencies to continually strengthen intelligence gathering and joint operations.

To strengthen operational capacity, FOU Zone ‘A’ has established a specialized intelligence unit that integrates human intelligence with open-source intelligence tools.

The unit is also deploying modern technologies, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), to map contraband movement patterns and enhance interception success rates.

Beyond enforcement, the unit has recorded notable gains in revenue recovery through targeted compliance operations and post-clearance audits. According to Comptroller Aliyu, the total Duty Paid Value (DPV) of seized goods during the review period amounted to ₦5,504,039,720.

“This figure reflects both the scale and effectiveness of our operations and our direct contribution to national revenue mobilization,” he stated.

As part of its ongoing modernization drive, the Customs Area Controller announced the imminent relocation of the unit to a newly commissioned ultra-modern command headquarters in Ogun State. The facility is equipped with advanced monitoring and data analytics systems designed to boost operational efficiency and strengthen inter-agency coordination.

Aliyu noted that the unit is firm on enforcement against smuggling and economic sabotage, but remains committed to supporting legitimate trade.

“Our strategy ensures strict compliance without hampering lawful commercial activities,” he said.

He commended Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for his guidance and support, and reiterated the unit’s resolve to safeguard Nigeria’s borders and economy.

The Customs Area Controller also thanked stakeholders and media partners for their cooperation, promising continued diligence in tackling smuggling and illicit trade.
