NIMASA DG Charges Staff To Consolidate Gains Drive Maritime Progress
…Says Zero Piracy, IMO Win, USCG Lifting of CoE Must Be Built Upon*
The Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, has called on staff of the Agency to consolidate on recent achievements and adopt a more disciplined, performance-driven culture to sustain the momentum of growth in Nigeria’s maritime sector.
Dr. Mobereola gave the charge during a two-day Senior Management Strategy Session on the NIMASA Medium-Term Strategic Plan covering September 2025 to August 2028*. The session was held at the *Nigeria Maritime Resource Development Centre, Apapa, Lagos
Speaking at the opening, the DG highlighted key milestones recorded under the leadership of the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Alhaji Adegboyega Oyetola.
According to him, the Agency has recorded *four consecutive years of zero piracy incidents in Nigerian waters, secured *Nigeria’s re-election into Category C of the International Maritime Organisation, IMO, after a 14-year gap, and achieved the *lifting of the 12-year Condition of Entry, CoE, imposed by the United States Coast Guard* on vessels sailing from Nigerian ports to the United States.
“Sustaining and building on these gains requires a more disciplined, performance-driven approach,” Dr. Mobereola stated.
“The decisions we take here will not only shape our internal processes but will also determine the broader trajectory of Nigeria’s maritime sector.”
The DG noted that the stakes are even higher today because Nigeria now accounts for over 47% of all port calls in the Gulf of Guinea*, positioning the country as the dominant maritime hub in the West and Central African region.
He therefore urged management staff to be deliberate in their deliberations: “Be sincere in discussing our current realities. Be focused in prioritizing the areas that truly move the needle. And be accountable — because every outcome from this session must translate into clear ownership, timelines, and measurable results.”
Dr. Mobereola described the strategy session as a platform for *constructive engagement* where ideas can be challenged, refined, and converted into actionable strategies.
“The strength of this Agency lies in our collective expertise, and we must leverage that fully,” he added.
The DG also commended staff for their role in what he called *“the most transformative chapter in the history of NIMASA.
He listed ongoing reforms that are reshaping the Agency’s image and operations globally to include: the automation of the Ship Registry, review of STCW standards, disbursement of the Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund, CVFF, and the automation of NIMASA’s workflow system.
“We are not merely improving processes. We are building a new foundation for efficiency, transparency, innovation, and international recognition,” the DG said.
The Senior Management Strategy Session is convened periodically to review the Agency’s direction, reaffirm priorities, and strengthen resolve* towards achieving NIMASA’s statutory mandate in line with the Ministerial deliverables of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy
