In a major step towards strengthening regional security and deepening cross-border cooperation, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun I Area Command, has opened a new chapter in bilateral relations with the Republic of Benin, following a high-level security meeting between top Customs and Police authorities of both countries at Idiroko.

The strategic meeting, led by the Acting Customs Area Controller (CAC) of Ogun I Command, Deputy Comptroller Abdulhamid Ibrahim, brought together senior officers of the Nigeria Customs Service, the Benin Republic Customs Administration and the Benin Republic Police Force, in what has been described as one of the most significant engagements between the two neighbouring nations in recent times.

The visit, which featured extensive closed-door deliberations and on-the-spot assessment of border operations, was aimed at reinforcing joint security, dismantling trans-border criminal networks, curbing smuggling and other illicit activities, while at the same time facilitating legitimate trade and movement across the busy Idiroko-Igolo corridor.

According to officials at the meeting, the engagement underscores the shared resolve of Nigeria and Benin Republic to build a seamless, secure and prosperous border corridor, in line with the broader goals of sub-regional integration, ECOWAS protocols and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

A major highlight of the bilateral talks was the finalisation of a framework for real-time information and intelligence sharing between the two countries. The framework is designed to enable both sides to track, intercept and dismantle smuggling syndicates, arms trafficking networks, drug peddlers and irregular migration routes before they pose a threat to either nation.

Emphasising that security is a collective responsibility, the delegations also reviewed and harmonised joint patrol strategies along the porous borderline corridors, particularly the unapproved routes and creeks often exploited by smugglers and other criminal elements. The move, they said, is critical to protecting national economies, safeguarding border communities and ensuring the safety of officers deployed to the frontlines.

Beyond security, discussions also focused on trade facilitation. Both sides extensively deliberated on streamlining clearance procedures, deepening Coordinated Border Management, accelerating the implementation of the One-Stop Border Post (OSBP) concept, addressing operational bottlenecks and promoting transparent, technology-driven trade integration between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin.

Speaking during the bilateral talks, the Acting Customs Area Controller, Ogun I Command, Deputy Comptroller Abdulhamid Ibrahim, stressed the importance of neighbourly solidarity, mutual trust and proactive enforcement in securing the border.

“Building a closer and more fruitful relationship with our neighbours is a fundamental priority. Criminal elements do not respect artificial boundaries; therefore, our response must be unified, swift and uncompromising. This visit solidifies our shared dedication to safeguarding our economic assets, protecting our officers on the frontlines, and ensuring that legitimate traders thrive safely,” DC Ibrahim stated.

He noted that the Nigeria Customs Service under the leadership of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, remains committed to modern, intelligence-led border management, enhanced stakeholder engagement and the promotion of lawful trade as a catalyst for economic growth.

In their separate remarks, the Beninese counterparts, the Customs Area Controller in charge of Igolo-Idiroko, Col. Kounozo, and the Commissioner of Police, Moussa, commended the renewed vigour and sincerity in the bilateral relations, describing the visit as timely and strategic.

They noted that multi-agency cooperation involving Customs, Police and other law enforcement agencies remains the silver bullet for sustainable border management, regional stability and the protection of the economic interests of both countries.

At the end of the meeting, both nations reiterated their unwavering resolve to build a model border post framework that champions economic growth, enhances revenue, promotes lawful trade and closes ranks against economic saboteurs and criminal elements operating along the border.

Stakeholders say the renewed synergy is expected to yield visible results in the coming months, with improved intelligence sharing, joint operations and coordinated enforcement expected to significantly reduce smuggling, arms trafficking and other cross-border crimes along the Nigeria-Benin border
