President Tinubu Retains Customs CG Adeniyi Till Feb 2027, Says Reforms Must Be Completed

President Bola Tinubu has granted a final 6-month extension to Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, keeping the reform-driven CG in office till February 2027.
The Statehouse announced Thursday that the extension goes beyond continuity. It’s about consolidation. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information & Strategy, said Adeniyi needs the time to fully entrench the National Single Window and guide the Service through a smooth leadership transition.
His earlier extension was due to expire August 1, 2026. Tinubu’s new directive gives him 6 more months to finish what he started.
Working with the NCS Board, Adeniyi will:
Promote deserving officers to Comptroller rank to reward merit
Retire officers who have clocked 60 years or served 35 years, in line with civil service rules
The objective is clear: refresh the Service, strengthen institutions, and avoid leadership gaps.
Adeniyi’s journey is the definition of “rise through the ranks.” After graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s, he joined Customs and earned his stripes. He once served as the National Public Relations Officer of the Service — a role that sharpened his communication and public engagement skills.
He climbed steadily: Deputy Comptroller 2012 → Comptroller 2017 → Assistant Comptroller General 2020 → Acting DCG Jan 2023 → CGC June 2023 when Tinubu appointed him.
Under his watch, Customs has battled smuggling, boosted trade facilitation, and delivered consistent revenue growth despite economic pressure.
Tinubu’s move sends one signal: reforms started must be completed. The next 6 months will cement Adeniyi’s legacy and determine the future direction of Nigeria Customs.
