The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has rolled out an ambitious plan to turbocharge the country’s non-oil export sector, underpinned by a trio of strategic initiatives: a thorough overhaul of port infrastructure, sweeping simplification of export procedures, and the implementation of fully automated port operations, This comprehensive approach aims to transform Nigeria’s export landscape, making it more efficient, competitive, and attractive to global trade partners.
At the recently concluded 37th Enugu International Trade Fair, NPA’s Managing Director Abubakar Dantsoho unveiled the authority’s game plan: repositioning Nigeria’s port system to catapult local producers, especially SMEs, into the global market arena, By doing so, NPA aims to unlock new opportunities for Nigerian businesses to compete and thrive internationally.
Dantsoho emphasized that Enugu’s strategic positioning as a commercial gateway to South-East Nigeria is a gamechanger, unlocking vast opportunities for export expansion, particularly in agro-allied products – we’re talking cassava, cocoa, or even processed foods; the potential is massive.
He emphasized that Enugu’s prime positioning as the gateway to South-East Nigeria is a major catalyst for unlocking export potential, aligning perfectly with NPA’s core mission. Kudos to Enugu Chamber of Commerce for keeping the trade fair flame burning, driving enterprise growth & global trade connections.
He lauded the Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture for their unwavering commitment to the trade fair, transforming it into a premier platform that catalyzes enterprise development and fosters meaningful international trade relationships.
NPA’s pushing full throttle, on ramping up cargo traffic & capacity! Dantsoho reveals they’re splashing investments into revamping key eastern ports – Onne, Warri, Calabar. And that’s not all, they’re also dishing out top-notch technical guidance to deep seaport players, aiming to crank up vessel & cargo flow to the Eastern region sustainably.
He underscored the pivotal role trade plays in fast-tracking Nigeria’s economic ambitions, emphasizing NPA’s unwavering dedication to dismantling entrenched obstacles that’ve long undermined export competitiveness, paving the way for a more vibrant, globally competitive trade landscape.
The establishment of Export Process Terminals (EPTs) is a cornerstone of NPA’s reform drive, specifically engineered to simplify, streamline, and turbocharge export procedures for Nigerian goods, amplifying their global competitiveness.
“As some of us are privy to, we’ve rolled out Export Process Terminals (EPTs) with a clear mandate: to dismantle the erstwhile cumbersome export procedures, injecting efficiency and ease into the process of getting Nigerian goods to global shores,” Dantsoho declared.
He elucidated that the Export Process Terminals (EPTs) function as an integrated, one-stop hub, comprehensively handling all export-related activities under one roof, thereby yielding significant reductions in delays and operational inefficiencies, ultimately fast-tracking Nigerian exports.
“The EPTs were meticulously conceptualised to function as an all-encompassing, one-stop shop, orchestrating a seamless blend of cargo consolidation, stuffing, documentation, packaging, certification, and onward shipment, thereby eradicating the previously prevalent duplications and bureaucratic overlaps that significantly undermined the competitiveness of Nigerian exports ”
To further amplify operational efficiency and synchronize with the Federal Government’s overarching ease-of-doing-business mandate, the NPA is proactively driving the full automation of its processes through the strategic implementation of the National Single Window (NSW) system, fostering a more agile, tech-driven trade ecosystem.
“He emphasised that to attain this objective, they are deliberately removing human intervention, a common catalyst for covert transactions, by spearheading the comprehensive automation of their processes, anchored by the rollout of the National Single Window (NSW) system, aiming to sanitise and accelerate trade.”
He portrayed the NSW as a prestigious, globally benchmarked system, meticulously designed to facilitate frictionless interaction and synergy among all pertinent stakeholders entrenched in the trade value chain, fostering an ecosystem of transparency and accelerated trade facilitation.
“For absolute clarity, the NSW embodies the pinnacle of global best practices, serving as an integrated platform that interconnects all stakeholders across the entire trade value chain, facilitating effortless interaction and data exchange at the mere click of a button, epitomising efficiency ”
Dantsoho further elucidated that the EPTs would be strategically interconnected with Domestic Export Warehouses, forged through a synergistic collaboration with the Nigerian Export Promotion Council and an array of other pivotal partners , with the overarching aim of fortifying port-hinterland connectivity and catalysing the unlocking of vast export opportunities for businesses across Nigeria’s diverse regions.
He emphatically assured stakeholders of the NPA’s unwavering commitment to fostering strategic partnerships with investors and exporters , issuing a compelling urging for them to capitalise on the plethora of opportunities presented by NPA’s cutting-edge platforms and comprehensive services, designed to propel business growth and unlock Nigeria’s immense trade potential.
“He underscored the authority’s resolute commitment to fostering partnerships, affirming that NPA’s portals remain perpetually open to collaborative ventures. He highlighted that meticulous measures have been instituted to intricately connect value creators nestled in Nigeria’s most remote hinterlands with burgeoning clusters of global demand, spanning the farthest reaches of the world, thereby catalysing unprecedented trade opportunities.”
