Fit for Duty: Apapa Customs Releases Stress, Boosts Morale

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Apapa Area Command, has kicked off a physical fitness exercise aimed at promoting the mental and physical wellbeing of officers as part of efforts to encourage work-life balance and long-term health.

The Customs Area Controller (CAC), Comptroller Emmanuel Oshoba, disclosed this during a physical fitness session held at the Command on Thursday, 29 January 2026. He said the initiative aligns with the work-life balance policy of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi.

“This is to keep officers both mentally and physically fit. This is more so, considering the hustle and bustle of this city, the family issues we have, all these things tell on officers, and we spend long hours working, so we need to balance work and life, for longevity and goodhealth even after service,” Oshoba said.

The CAC stressed the importance of proactive health management, recalling past incidents linked to stress and exhaustion, particularly within the challenging urban environment in which the Command operates.

He emphasised that the exercise was a deliberate effort to improve officers’ fitness and productivity, rather than a publicity-driven activity.

“We are not doing this for publicity, it is meant to build up our fitness, so that we will be able to cope with our work schedule. We do a lot of job here and mostly mental, and many of us sit down a lot and this affects our health, so there is need for us to be active and we should extend this beyond what we are doing here, it should be a personal habit,” he noted.

Officers of the Command welcomed the initiative and pledged to sustain the fitness exercise, both individually and collectively, as part of efforts to maintain healthy lifestyles while meeting operational demands.
