By Success Okezie
The immediate past President – General of Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) Comrade (Prince) Dr. Adewale Adeyanju has congratulated the newly elected Branch President of the Dockworkers branch, Comrade Bolaji Agboola, and his entire executives.
Prince Adeyanju urged the newly elected President of the Dockworkers to embrace all his executives with a touch of olive branch, recalling the false turmoil that preceded the peaceful election that took place in Warri, while emphasising that there were no factions and that we can always disagree to agree in one accord and in the good spirit of the Union with the slogan of “Forward Ever, Backward Never”, while disabusing the minds of those who thought there were divisions in the house. He particularly praised the outgone President, Comrade Tajudeen Ibrahim Ohize, his successor for his commitment to the branch during his tenure, as he admonished the new leadership to do better, hence, they were voted to surpass all their predecessors.
The current Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Chairman Global, International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) also commends the courage and decisive acumen of the President-General of the Union, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, whose cautiousness in handling the preelection period till the election day proper cannot be underestimated. In fact, I give it all to Delta State born labour leader, Maritime Expert and Seasoned Sailor for a job well done. He has indeed made me proud and by extension the entire Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria in carrying out this onerous assignments of the Unions elections so far.
The PG emeritus reiterated that the newly elected executives must borrow a leaf from the exited President of the Dockworkers branch, Comrade Ohize and the past Presidents of the branch and aim to do more exploits towards raising the standard of the branch in this first tenure of four years, which will mirror and score them in good light of progression.
In same vein, Dr. Adeyanju also felicitated Comrade Sunday Avose, President of the Seafarers Branch of the Union on this day of Seafarers currently taking place in PortHarcourt, the 25 of June, 2025.
He sent his warm greetings to all stakeholders in the Maritime sector and friends of the Union, Government Agencies, top government functionaries, dignitaries from all walks of life across the country and beyond for gracing the 2025 Seafarer’s Day and identifying with the Nigerian Seafarers.
Adeyanju also advised the Nigerian Maritime and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to definitively look into the challenges of the Nigerian Seafarers and their training institutions, where the chunks of the cadets are turned out with no vessels to engage them year in out. The quintessential labour leader charged NIMASA to do the needful towards making sure that Nigerian Seafarers do not lag behind, especially in retraining them vis a vis procurement of all the documents that would put the Seafarers at par with their counterparts across the globe.
