The visit by CP Ibrahim and his team is aimed to strengthen ties and foster a collaborative relationship with MWUN, one of the foremost maritime unions in the country. During the visit, CP Ibrahim emphasized the importance of synergy between the Maritime Workers Union and the Port Police Command.
He highlighted that the police and the union must work together as brothers, not just friends, to ensure effective policing and security within the maritime sector.
CP Ibrahim praised Dr. Adeyanju, the President-General of MWUN, who also serves as the Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Vice President Global of the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF). He assured Dr. Adeyanju that his office is always open to the union and expressed his admiration for the union’s executive team.
Dr. Adeyanju expressed his delight at the visit, describing CP Ibrahim as a versatile and accomplished police officer. He noted CP Ibrahim’s impressive career, which includes graduating from the Nigeria Police Academy in June 1994, rising to the rank of Commissioner of Police, and leading peacekeeping missions in Sudan and Kosovo, where he received United Nations commendations.
During the occasion, Dr. Adeyanju posed a rhetorical question about the essence of policing, to which he answered that policing is embodied by officers like CP Ibrahim, whose numerous achievements reflect his dedication and expertise.
Dr. Adeyanju assured the CP that MWUN is committed to working closely with the Port Police Command to maintain security and order in the maritime sector.
The visit marked a historic moment for MWUN, as it was the first time the union hosted the Port Police Command. Dr. Adeyanju promised continued collaboration and highlighted the union’s modernization efforts, which have eliminated thuggery and hooliganism, replacing them with well-trained union workers across jetties, oil & gas platforms, and sea ports.
Dr. Adeyanju also addressed the union’s strategic approach to industrial actions, emphasizing that strikes are a last resort after exhausting all avenues for dialogue with the government and stakeholders. He acknowledged the economic impact of shutting down ports and assured that the union remains tactical and diplomatic in its actions.
The MWUN President noted that the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering a secure and efficient port environment.
The Union’s proactive engagement with key stakeholders, including Mr. Ibrahim, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, and the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, underscores its dedication to addressing critical issues such as effective policing and the provision of necessary equipment for law enforcement officers.
Comrade Adeyanju’s assurance to advocate for these needs at the highest levels reflects the Union’s strategic approach to ensuring that the port operations are not only smooth but also secure. The collaborative efforts and declared community synergy are expected to create a conducive atmosphere for all port activities, ultimately benefiting the entire maritime sector.
